WHAT IS THE KETO DIET?
The Keto Diet is derived as a way to decrease seizures in epileptic patients. Ketogenic is the process in which fat is metabolized for energy and, as a result, produces ketones. The keto diet is a high-fat, moderate protein and low carb option that recently has been used as a method to shed pounds. During this process, a person’s metabolism reaches a state of ketosis where the body taps into its fat reserves for energy and ergo, weight loss begins.
However, the challenge lies in the ability to consume nutrients that the body to maintain its state of metabolic ketosis. Many find it difficult to keep up with such a diet since most rely on a high carbohydrate diet. Also, genetic and metabolic factors come into play since everybody is different.
The general consensus regarding how safe the keto diet is on a long term basis hasn’t really been verified. However, when consuming high processed, low nuritrant food such as chips and baked goods impacts the heart in negative ways as well. Therefore, it is up to the person to decide what is best for them.
