If you're considering or recovering from rhinoplasty, you may notice that your nose looks a little different as the seasons change. This can be especially noticeable during the summer, when warmer temperatures may cause increased swelling.

So, does having nose surgery in the summer mean you'll have more swelling?

Not necessarily. While temperature can influence swelling, the time of year you have surgery generally does not determine your final result.

Why Does Heat Make Your Nose Swell?

Warm weather causes blood vessels to dilate, which can increase blood flow to the skin and contribute to temporary swelling.

After a nose procedure, the tissues are already healing and can be more sensitive to changes in temperature. As a result, you may notice that your nose looks or feels somewhat more swollen on hot days.

This can be particularly noticeable later in the recovery process, when most of the initial postoperative swelling has already subsided.

What Happens in Cold Weather?

Cold temperatures can have the opposite effect.

Blood vessels constrict in response to cold, which can temporarily reduce swelling and make the nose appear somewhat smaller or more defined.

This doesn't mean your nose is actually changing shape from season to season. Rather, temporary changes in swelling can affect its appearance.

Does This Mean You Shouldn't Have Rhinoplasty in the Summer?

No.

There is generally no specific "best season" for rhinoplasty or other nose procedures. Patients have successful surgeries throughout the year.

If you have surgery during the summer, your nose will simply experience different environmental conditions as you move through your recovery.

For example, someone who has surgery in July may experience the effects of warmer weather early in recovery and then cooler temperatures later in the year. Someone who has surgery in January will experience the opposite cycle.

The season doesn't change the fundamental healing process.

How Long Does Postoperative Swelling Last?

Swelling after rhinoplasty varies considerably from patient to patient.

Most of the noticeable swelling improves relatively early in the recovery process, but subtle swelling can persist for considerably longer. The nasal tip, in particular, can take time to fully settle.

It's also normal for swelling to fluctuate during recovery rather than disappearing in a perfectly linear fashion.

One day your nose may look more defined, while another day it may appear slightly fuller.

This doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.

What Can You Do About Summer Swelling?

The most important thing is to follow your surgeon's specific postoperative instructions.

Depending on your procedure and stage of recovery, your surgeon may recommend limiting certain activities or avoiding excessive heat and sun exposure.

It's also important to remember that temporary swelling doesn't mean your final result has changed.

If you're concerned about a change in swelling or have questions during your recovery, contact your surgical team rather than trying to diagnose the issue yourself.

The Bottom Line

Warm weather can make a healing nose appear more swollen, while colder temperatures can temporarily make it appear more defined.

But the time of year you have rhinoplasty generally doesn't determine your outcome.

If you have surgery in the summer, your nose will simply experience both warm and cold weather as the seasons change.

The most important factors are your individual anatomy, surgical technique, healing process, and following your surgeon's postoperative instructions.
