It is not like a study showing smoking having a deleterious effect is shocking. From experience, many of us can deduce that smoking is not healthy and you will not look as young as if you didn’t smoke. A new twin study demonstrates this.
Twin studies are perhaps one of the best ways of determining the effects of a treatment or lifestyle. The annual festival at Twinsburg, Ohio is said to be the largest annual gathering of twins in the world. Guyoron and associates from Case Western University recently published a study in the Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Journal. They found that smokers were more likely to have identifiable characteristics of aging such as lines around the mouth and eye bags. The study did not look at the quality of the skin.
While a study that shows that smoking makes you look older is not shocking, it does provide more objective evidence for the harmful effects. The skin is an astounding insight to the overall health and condition of the internal body. It is quite rare to see a patient who smokes, suntans, and eats poorly to have beautiful skin. For many patients, the key is to live a healthy lifestyle so that you will feel and look better.
