Cold Weather Beauty Tips

02/17/2014 by Anil R. Shah, MD

Cold weather can be hard on your body and skin. The cold weather combined with the low humidity can create many beauty issues. Fortunately there are several solutions that can help restore hydration and coloration during this time.

Dry Skin

Winter is notorious for creating dry dull skin. The key to combating dry skin is to ensure there is adaquete hydration and moisture. Make sure you drink lots of water to help replenish yourself. Another key is to receive plenty of healthy oils, most commonly known as omega-3’s. Omega-3’s can be found in a variety of foods including certain types of fish. Finally, use an effective moisture and hydration trapping element. The latest buzz word in hydration for the skin is hyaluronic acids commonly known as HAs. While most people think of HA’s as an injectable filler such as Restylane or Juvederm, it is actually a normal part of healthy hydrated skin. When used as a topical skin agent, such as with the product Hyalis, the skin will retain water and have a plumper and more youthful appearance even in winter.

Chapped Lips

Chapped lips can be one of the most difficult issues to deal with during winter. Chapped lips are not only unsightly, but can be a mechanism for diseases to spread to other people. Chapped lips often respond better to pertoleum-based products such as Aquaphor healing ointment. Wax-based forumlas do not hydrate lips but rather serve to protect lips. Additonally, franganced lip products can cause irritation and dryness. Try a scented lip stick or gloss to avoid the excess dryness.

General Tips

  • Make sure you set the humidity at around 50% during the winter. Humidity below that will promote dry skin. Humidity above that can actually allow condensation and encourage bacterial growth.
  • Use growth factor products such as Bioserum and TNS to help your skin recover faster during the winter time.
  • Winter is a great time to have LASER procedures since the sun is less influential during this time
  • Make sure you exercise. Exercise improves your circulation and can help improve your skin during the winter months.
  • Avoid hot water during baths and showers. Luke warm water has a less drying effect.
  • Use hand santizers when possible. Soap and water can have a drying effect on skin.
