India Lips Pakistan Lips: Fullness Lips

07/05/2016 by Anil R. Shah, MD

Fullness LipsIndians have a tempestuous relationship with their lips.  Many did not like the fullness of their lips during the 80’s and sought lip reduction in the States.  During the late 90’s and currently, a full lip has been embraced by the West as a sign of youth and vitality.  Ironically, most Westerns are now trying to achieve the natural fullness of the Indian lip.

A lip should not dominate a person’s facial appearance.  Lips which are too full can distract from the delicacy of a person’s mouth and nose.  Lips which are too thin can make a person look years older and predispose individuals to perioral wrinkling.

Too many surgeons utilize the motto of breast implants, bigger is better.  With lips, in particular with Indian lips, an exact balance must be achieved to preserve harmony with the rest of the facial features.

What is lip reduction?

Lip reduction is a procedure where the size of the lip is reduced.  It is used on faces where the lip dominates the facial appearance.  Most of the time the incision is placed on the inside portion of the lip preventing any visible scars on the outside.  The lip reduction must be done precisely in order to provide a subtle but balanced approach.

What is lip augmentation?

In some patients the lip is too thin.  Augmentation with natural materials can be helpful in creating a more balanced look in the lip and create more drama in the face.  It should not be over augmented and requires a skillful hand.
