Will the iPhone X’s Facial Recognition Work After

11/01/2017 by Anil R. Shah, MD

The iPhone X is releasing November 3rd, and one of the latest features Apple announced is the facial recognition feature. The software itself is quite amazing, by using a combination of light projectors and sensors to take several images of your facial features. Collectively called the ‘TrueDepth Camera System’, Apple says by using infrared light, the software builds a ‘detailed depth map of your face to recognize you in an instant.’

But this raises the question: will my iPhone X be able to recognize me after facial alterations? In comparison to the rest of our distinct features, body types, hair color, the face is most unique to each individual.

As a society, we are lucky to have diversity amongst every person. The curvatures of the nose, color of the iris, and the shape of the lips make up the most apparent features of the face, making everyone’s face unique.

Apple has shared that the iOS software has the ability to continue to recognize changes throughout seasons, hair color changes, and facial modifications. Wearing a scarf? Blonde to brunette? Recent rhinoplasty? The iPhone X has the ability to note these changes and continue to recognize you.

We look relatively similar from the necks down, but the face is extremely distinctive. As an individual undergoes botox, lip fillers, and reconstructive facial surgery, the features of the face can be altered but does not alter one’s identity. So yes, if you are considering purchasing an iPhone X, you will still be able to unlock your iPhone after facial refinements.
