Not all plastic surgeons are board certified, so check with the physician or board to find out (see below for more information on doing so).

There are a few boards pertaining to plastic surgery. Many plastic surgeons who specialize in the body hold certification from The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, while many facial plastic surgeons, like Dr. Anil Shah, are certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgeons. Plastic surgeons of the body might also be additionally certified by The American Board of Surgery, and some plastic surgeons might be additionally certified by a specialized board such as The American Board of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat), with which Dr. Shah is certified.

To determine a physician's certification: Check the physician’s website or credentials, most will list this information (see here for Dr. Shah's Affiliations). From there, there are a few ways to check a doctor's certification one is the board's website and the other is by calling the boards toll free number. For example, Dr. Anil Shah is certified by The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which has a certification website (link to http://www.abfprs.org/certified/index.cfm) And he is also certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, which was a phone number to call to check certification (713-850-0399). The final way to to ask to see the certificate of membership. Most, such as Dr. Shah, will have this prominently displayed in their office.
