Botulinum Toxin and Facial Filler Pre Instructions

Please discontinue any blood thinning meds at least one week prior to your injection. (See blood thinning medicaitons)

For facial fillers, especially lip augmentation, please bring an antihistamine to your visit. Examples of antihistamine include Benadryl or Claritin. Bendaryl is the most effective antihistamine but may cause drowsiness while Claritin causes less drowsiness.

If receiving lip augmentation, please notify office if prior history of herpes or cold sores break out.

All makeup will be removed in areas treated. If returning to work or going out after, you may want to bring makeup to reapply.

Post Botox and Facial Filler Instructions

After Botox, you may immediately return to normal activity including workouts, alchohol, lying down and using normal facial activity. We recommend that facials are scheduled prior to botox and that laser therapy and IPL is given prior to botox. Botox will causes temporary redness for 5 to 10 minutes and may impact the target of IPL and LASER.

After facial fillers, we recommend that you do not exercise for 12 hours after treatment. It is OK to drink alcohol. We also recomend that you wait at least 5 days before receiving a facial. LASER therapy and IPL is preferrably given prior to facial filler treatment but can be given as early as one week after treatment. Bruising will change the color of the skin and impact the intended target of the laser.

When facial fillers are injected into the nasolabial folds, cheek bones, and around the eyes, Dr. Shah may recommend gentle massage for the first few days after injection. Arnica lotion should gently massage the area as instructed by the doctor. Most facial fillers have the consistency of toothpaste and can be conformed for the first few days after injection.

Aspirin stops platlets from clotting blood. It actually acts in a permanent manner and takes approximately 4 weeks for its effects to be removed from your body.

NSAIDS are a class of medications which temporarily block platlets. Usually 10 days is sufficient for this class of medication to allow for platlet function to return to normal. Examples of NSAIDS are ibuprofen (advil), celebrex, vioxx..

Vitamin E, fish oil pills, high doses of garlic can also thin blood. Coumadin and heparin are medicines designed to thin the blood. Injections given with these medications may result in bruises and swelling over a longer period of time.
